What the replay tells you that the result sheet doesn't

A results sheet records an outcome. A track records the decisions that produced it, which is the only part you can change next weekend.

Watch the first beat, not the finish

Most places are won and lost before the windward mark. Replay the first four minutes and watch where your lane went, not where the fleet ended up.

Look for the compression

Find the moments where boats around you stack up. Those are the places where a small decision made a large difference — a late tack, a wide rounding, a lane that closed.

Compare the same leg across races

One race is an anecdote. Three races on the same course is evidence. If the same leg costs you every time, that is your training session for next week.

Debrief with the boat, not at it

For coaches: playing a replay back to a sailor works far better than describing what you saw from the RIB. It removes the argument about what happened and gets straight to why.
